To Whom it May Concern,
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, is soliciting applications for two annual grants of $5,000 each to two doctoral candidates whose primary concentration is photography and who are currently working on a dissertation for an accredited academic institution. The grant will recognize scholarship of the highest caliber and promote excellence in the history of photography by supporting the completion of the recipient’s dissertation. A university may nominate one student currently enrolled in its doctoral program. Any doctoral candidate who has completed all coursework and has started to write a dissertation is eligible for nomination. The recipient of the grant may use the funds for travel, for research materials, or to set aside time to write.
The 2008-09 Joan and Stanford Alexander Dissertation Award recipients were Dalia Habib Linssen (Boston University) and Makeda Best (Harvard University). The 2009 – 10 recipients were Annie Counter (University of Delaware) and Lindsay Ruth Harris (Institute of Fine Arts at New York University).
Applications should include:
- Name, address, phone, email of applicant
- Curriculum Vitae of applicant
- Name, address, phone and email of a contact at academic institution for which applicant is writing dissertation
- Proof of completion of course work or that it will be completed before grant period begins
- Topic of dissertation: 1 to 6 pages
- Proposal of how grant funds would be used: 2 to 3 pages
- 2 or 3 letters of reference

Each nominee will be carefully considered and the recipients of the Joan and Stanford Alexander Award, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will ultimately be chosen by a jury of museum personnel, including Anne Tucker, Curator of Photography and Yasufumi Nakamori, Assistant Curator of Photography as well as Tracy Xavia Karner, PhD, Director, Visual Studies, and Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Houston.
