INAUGURAL NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Saturday 16th October 2010
11.00am to 5.00pm
BRITANNIA HOTEL, 67 NEW STREET,
BIRMINGHAM B2 4DU
The private automobile dominates the social and economic environment so completely that it will take a truly radical alternative to displace it. A zero fare policy is necessary not only to give drivers the biggest possible incentive to abandon their cars, but more importantly to encourage people to see public transport in a different way, as a genuine public service rather than as a commodity for sale.

Back In Town. Bovisa City Milano

.

polipress, Milano, 2007

An International Symposium at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway, September 9-10, 2010.
The Urban Images symposium brings together an internationally renowned group of artists and scholars for a two-day program in order to discuss the field of artistic film and video related to architecture and urban space. The objective of the symposium is to expand theoretical concepts and artistic tools for understanding the inherent qualities of moving images and its relationship to urban culture. The program focuses on moving images’ influence on urban architecture, urban architecture’s relationship to avant-garde film, the city as a source for artistic film and video, and reflections on urban architecture in recent film and video art.
Considering the globally expanding urban developments and the increasingly fluid borders between research in architecture and moving images, this symposium presents important cross-disciplinary inquiries in the fields of architecture and visual practice. Bearing in mind Gilles Deleuze’s sensitivity to the ways in which contemporary culture is becoming fundamentally an audiovisual culture, the symposium will outline ontological and psychological relationships to moving images in the context of urban environment.
The following people will present their most recent research in this field: Parveen Adams, Giuliana Bruno, Bull.Miletic, Andreas Bunte, Beatriz Colomina, Mark Cousins, Edward Dimendberg, Tom Gunning, Henrik Gustafsson, Marit Paasche, and Judy Radul.
Moderator: Mattias Ekman
Registration fee: NOK 400 (NOK 200 students)
Registration deadline: Friday, September 3, 2010

Landscape is where humans dwell. Here we work, think, dream, love, raise new generations, and interact with other living beings, the earth and the sea. Humans and other living beings have time-space rhythms. So does the milieu. Ways of life are established and change with the passage of time, as does the landscape. A part of the past lives on in each woman and man; and in every landscape live bits of the past. Life in a landscape is a complex whole, a process, involving the past, present and future In this context, knowledge, practice, and imagination are the principal themes to be addressed at the conference.
The conference is addressed to geographers, ecologists, social scientists, humanists, artists, landscape architects, historians, archaeologists, landscape managers and planners, as well as other scholars and practitioners interested in European landscapes.

A new book by Andrea Mubi Brighenti has just been published by Palgrave Macmillan.
Visibility in Social Theory and Social Research
What is social visibility? How does it affect people and public issues? How are visibility regimes created, organised and contested? Tackling both social theory and social research, this book provides an exploration into how intervisibilities produce crucial sociotechnical and biopolitical effects. It elaborates the concept of visibility as a general category for social theory and social research. The issue of the visibility and intervisibility of social events, subjects and sites proves relevant to a wide range of disciplines including sociology, cultural and media studies, political science, urban studies, criminology, identity studies, and science and technology studies. However, to date no comprehensive reflection on the topic of visibility as a distinct category – ranking it as a basic sociological category – has been attempted: this book fills that gap.
